Carlsen gets third win on Day 5, Novy Bor extends lead

Day 5 of the European Chess Club Cup in Mayrhofen gave World Champion Magnus Carlsen his third win in his fourth game.

Carlsen played with the black pieces for his club Offerspill against Anton Kurbov (Ukr/Silla Valencia). After three hours and 24 minutes Carlsen was assured of victory. After the game Carlsen gave his first interview, but exclusively about his play in Mayrhofen, which he described as “quite decent”. Carlsen holds three wins and one draw.

Austria’s top star Markus Ragger took a break today, maybe for tactical reason. It worked. His Club Novy Bor won thanks to wins from Harikrishna, Vidit and Grandelius aganst the top seeded CSU ASE Supberbet with 4,5:1,5 and took the sole lead.

In the women’s section, Pamhagen beat Baden 2.5:1.5 in a duel between two Austrian clubs and leads the table ahead of the tied team CSU ASE Superbet, who also beat BGK KS Gwiazda Bydgoszcz 2.5:1.5 on table 1. Cercle d’Echecs de Monte-Carlo won 3:1 against Wood Green and are two points behind the leading duo.

ECCC organiser Werner Csrnko brought more than 220 participants of the European Chess Club Cup to the Zillertal Alps today on the Ahornbahn at the invitation of Bergbahnen Mayrhofen. Also present was former World Champion Viswanathan Anand, who was impressed by the mountain world. There was also an eagle show with Didi and Wally from the Adler-Bühne Ahorn – this resulted in a great snapshot with the chess superstar, who was already back at the top board in the afternoon and suffered his first defeat against compatriot Pentala Harikrishna.
